What is Cross-Country Skiing?
The simplest way to put it is that Cross-Country skiing is a winter sport that involves skiing across snow-covered terrain using skis and poles. Read more below to see some of its benefits.

The best cardio
Cross Country Skiing (also known as Nordic skiing) is widely known as one of the best excercises for our cardiovasular system due to the use of a large percentage of our muscle mass for moving forward
Low joint impact
With the gliding motion of Cross Country Skiing the impact on or joints is much lower than other forms of cardio such as running. This is especially beneficial to those with joint issues such as arthritis
Balance
Long skinny skis and the outstretched motion forces us to be mindful of our balance. With practice our balance gets better putting us at less risk of falls.
Mental Health
According to ParticipACTION, physical activity can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improve self-worth and self esteem. Spending time in nature has been shown to boost moods and reduce stress.

Social Wellbeing
While skiing itself is an individual activity, it is best enjoyed with friends. Joining our Club Events is a great way to meet people in the community and make connections with others who enjoy the sport of Cross Country Skiing. There are opportunities to participate in large events such as the Canadian Birkebeiner near Edmonton or a nearby Loppet (literally, “a whole bunch of people skiing together”) to challenge oneself or to simply feel the accomplishment of crossing the finish line.
